CME Launches EU2030 Roadmap for Circular Economy
On 30th January 2024, Classifieds Marketplaces Europe (CME) unveiled its EU2030 Roadmap, which outlines the crucial role that online second-hand marketplaces have in promoting a circular economy and enabling the twin green and digital transitions.
The event brought together policymakers, civil society, and industry representatives to discuss upcoming circular economy trends and actions needed to ensure the EU policy framework continues driving competitiveness and innovation in the sector.
Business representatives from leading EU-based tech companies, including Adevinta, OLX, Schibsted and, Vinted, urged European policymakers to establish an EU policy framework that enhances competitiveness and fosters innovation in the tech and second-hand sector.
CME is committed to empowering citizens to strengthen the circular economy and local communities by increasing awareness of how online classifieds platforms positively contribute to key goals outlined in the EU digital and green agenda.

“As the urgency to combat climate change intensifies, CME is stepping forward as a leader in advocating for a circular economy through the promotion of second-hand trade. Policymakers should adopt a comprehensive strategy for promoting second-hand trade, boost second-hand businesses, and align future rules without creating barriers to second-hand trade and innovation.”
Petra Wikström,
Senior Director of Public Policy
at Schibsted and CME Chair

“Our second-hand platforms are important actors in the ecological transition and drivers of digital transformation. Our presence in the daily lives of our fellow citizens gives us a key role to play in enabling the change of our societies and our economies. Together with the CME we have put forward proposals to European decision-makers to establish a political framework which makes it possible to combine competitiveness, technological innovation and circularity, in order to reach a key objective: making Europe the first climate-neutral continent in 2050.”
Amandine de Souza,
General Manager at Leboncoin.fr / Adevinta France

“OLX is at the forefront of promoting a circular economy by facilitating the exchange of pre-owned goods. Our commitment lies in enhancing user experience and increasing trust and safety, ensuring that individuals can easily access what they require, all while championing a sustainable lifestyle that prioritizes reuse. A regulatory framework that promotes reuse and ensures a consistent structure for second-hand markets is essential for the sustained expansion of the circular economy”
Serdar Akin,
Chief Product Officer at OLX

“Our mission is to make second-hand the first choice, to help people transition to more sustainable ways of consuming. For this to become a reality, we need more than ever a European approach to promote the second-hand trade”
Marianne Gybels,
Senior Director Sustainability at Vinted

“The debate on circular economy has become clear. Some want to downsize it to recycling. Others want to reshape production, distribution and consumption systems so that products last much longer.”
John Wante,
Member of the cabinet
of Belgian Environment Minister Zakia Khattabi
Neva Nahtigal, Director at Reuse and Recycling European Union Social Enterprises,
Sirpa Pietikäinen, Member of the European Parliament, William Neale, Adviser for Circular Economy at the European Commission and Petra Wikstrom, Senior Director of Public Policy at Schibsted and CME Chair provided invaluable insights on the upcoming circular economy trends that may shift policy priorities for the next legislative mandate (2024-2029), as well as actions needed to ensure the EU policy framework continues driving competitiveness and innovation in the sector.
